Life Suck? Try Being an Ex-Pat

Katrin and I met when I was working for AFRC Chiemsee. Although Chiemsee has been returned to the Bavarians, AFRC has an awesome resort in southern Germany. For those who have the time and inclination for an adventure, I highly recommend applying . . .

What Is Unconstitutional? Prop 8, or The Judge's Ruling.

This was a reply to a young friend whom applauded the Federal judge's decision to block California's Proposition 8 Constitutional amendment. I felt it necessary to educate her to the actual problem with the ruling.

[Princess], what we ultimately have to consider is the courts are ignoring the will of the people. The people of California overwhelmingly approved Prop. 8, an amendment to the California Constitution that expressly defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Marriage falls under states rights, not Federal. By blocking Prop. 8, a Federal judge overturned the right of the People of California to govern themselves. This is a very disturbing issue.

Prop. 8 is not unconstitutional. Anyone has the right to marry one person of the opposite sex, yet no one is required to marry anyone. Many heterosexual and homosexual couples choose to co-habitate without fear of government intrusion.

Regarding so-called rights that accompany marriage; California already has very broad Civil Union policy that guarantees those whom choose this option; shared benefits, implied power of attorney, etc.

I have very dear friends whom did marry during the window in which it was legal in California, and I would never take this from them. But the voters of California made a choice to amend their Constitution to clearly define a marriage. It is not for a Federal judge to usurp the rights of the People.

Like with PETA and other advocacy groups, the people who fought against Prop. 8 simplistically target teens and others with their dogma, verses educating them with the complete facts so people can form their own opinion.

If the People of California choose to change the State Constitution to define marriage as a union between any two adults, I would not fight this measure.

But let us recognize that the CDC identifies only 1.5 - 2% of the U.S. population identifies themselves as gay or bi-sexual. Within the United States as a whole this is only 6 million people. The population of California is just under 37 million. So, statistically, only 740,000 Californians are self-identified as gay or bi-sexual. Is it right that 3/4 million people can impose their will upon 37 million via judicial fiat?

What of the rights of 37 million people to govern themselves as they see fit?

Did the United States Vote for a President and Get a Queen?

It is reported Michelle Obama's entourage has secured 60 rooms for her 4-day vacation in Mirabella, near the Spanish island of Mallorca.

This is a playground for the rich in Europe. Rooms at the Villa Padierna rent for $2,500.00 per day, for a total of $600,000.00 dollars. Besides her daughter, she is accompanied by her "40 closest friends" and 70 Secret Service agents. Michelle and her friends traveled to Spain via Air Force Two. The UK Daily Mail is now calling her "Marie Antoinette". (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1300604/Michelle-Obama-modern-day-Marie-Antoinette-First-Lady-slammed-lavish-Marbella-holiday.html?ito=feeds-newsxml)

A few points:

* Wasn't this presidency supposed to rebuild the United States reputation with other countries,
* With the state of the U.S. economy and jobs, this money would have been better spent at a resort within the United States,
* The mainstream media used to bitch about George Bush retreating to his ranch in Texas for a week, which he owned and didn't spend a HALF-MILLION dollars to rent for 4 days

Hope and change?

"Men Don't Suck, You Just Confuse The Shit Out of Us."

So, a friend posted the question, "Why is it so hard for a guy to ask a girl out? You like her, she like you. What it the problem here men?"

Unfortunately for her . . . I answered.

[Darren] Signals, my dear, signals. From a young age we differentiate between "friends" and "lovers". If the relationship has moved into the "friends zone" it's really hard to move it out. The spark that comes with the first attraction when you're just acquaintances changes with friendship. The desire to "get physical" is muted when the person is your ... friend.

If that happens, you have to kick start the romance. This may mean telling the guy your romantic intentions. That you value them as a friend, but truly find them attractive, that they excite you, and would love it if they asked you out. Their response will guide you on how to proceed.

Love and attraction is something that cannot be forced. A square peg may fit into a round hole, but it leaves a lot of gaps. Romance requires a spark.

Later, one of her friends replied

[Conchita] That is a super answer! Thank you. And AMEN to you Lucy for asking the question. You go girl!!!)

Me . . .

[Darren] Just tryin' to be helpful.

She was thankful . . .

[Conchita] Well that was very helpful!) I guess I have to a lot more kick starting. Lol ;)

So another of her friends decides to chime in . . .

[Brenda] Men? Really who understands them.

. . . and this begat this . . .

[Becky] Sorry to say this (Keep in mind I am old and bitter) BOYS SUCK! Gosh, now I feel better. BTW - if you figure this out, let me know.

And now I can't let it go, because, well, it's me.

[Darren] Brenda, remember Men say the same about women. You torment us in our teens then confuse us as adults. That's part of what you have to understand. You were probably making a joke, but what you said is important. Your lack of understanding mirrors our lack of understanding.

Let's use a blunt example:

We meet, touch and smile. It is apparent from body language that you (the female) are very interested in physical contact. You are thinking that the touch of the person you are with would be incredible. If I were to speak openly with you, I'd say, "Brenda, I find you exciting and incredibly sexy. I would really like to slide you out of those jeans and make love to you." Your interest becomes scorn. "What kind of a girl do you think I am?!", you may say. Well, from the signals I received, one who is as horny as I am. But you have now shut down the guy for speaking to you honestly based upon the physical signals you sent.

I am not suggesting ANYONE should mate with someone of the opposite sex just because they're feeling physically "wound up". I simply use this as an extreme example of how we all want the same goal (dating, relationship, sex, marriage, etc.) but express our desires differently.

Simplify your signals and you may find it easier to read those of others.

. . . and then I couldn't stop . . .

[Darren] Conchita, you'd be surprised how much a coy smile and a lingering touch does to kick-start a relationship.

. . . and on I went . . .

[Darren] . . . and Becky, not to be crass, but boys who suck are not the kind you want to date. They play with a different set of rules and you are not their "target market".

. . . and now the friend fears things are spiralling out of control . . .

[Penelope] oh wow .ok so maybe i should of not ask this ?.. It is geting a little out of hand. Just whated to know why . So sorry .

. . . and I can't let go . . .

[Darren] Chill, Pickle! I did not use profanity and I honestly answered the question.

So the friend feels obligated to respond . . .

[Penelope] Darren , ok ok. just dont what to hurt any ones feelings. guess just haveing a hard time with this one. I think it is just one of those days. we all have them right? Im going to blame it on the rain. thanks they for being honesly, You were all way a good friend. But it is ture the single men i know do not ask the woman out, I was just geing on my soap box. i have found that i really like them at times. ( the soap boxes )

. . . su soapbox, mi soapbox . . .

[Darren] . . . but, I think it stinks that some guys (nee', boys) don't have the intestinal fortitude necessary to ask a woman out. A fear of rejection is a loss of happiness. Come on, guys. Make a moment, a memory, a lifetime, an eternity. If failure is your only option then step aside for those who embrace the gift of life by living.

Is LGBT Using Day of Silence As a Recruiting Tool? Part Three

In part one of this series I noted that teens are self-absorbed weiners who will pick on one another for any number of reasons. In part two, I provided an example of adults in a position of authority encouraging teens to break the rules for the benefit of the adults.

Parents, have you heard about April 16, The Day of Silence? Well, educate yourselves. On April 16, teenagers in high schools throughout the Country are being encouraged to tape their mouths shut as a protest to bring attention to " . . . anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender) name-calling, bullying and harassment . . ." The website, www.dayofsilence.org, cites the following:

On April 6, 2009, Carl Walker-Hoover took his life after enduring constant bullying, including anti-LGBT bullying. Though Carl did not identify as gay, his story is a tragic reminder that anti-LGBT bullying and harassment affects all students. Carl would have turned 12 on the 2009 Day of Silence.

So a website encouraging a protest against lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and trans-gender bullying is citing as an example a student who did not identify himself as gay, as the below-the-fold story to support this action. He may have been taunted as "gay", teased, bullied, and all around treated like shit by other students -- but he did not identify himself as gay. Thus, this despicable act was bullying, plain and simple. In South Hadley, MA, 15-year-old Phoebe Prince was bullied until she committed suicide. As best can be determined, she gave in sexually to an older boy and was labeled as a "slut".

As the CDC states that only 2% of people within the U.S. identify themselves as "gay, lesbian, or bi-sexual, but we know females account for 51% of the co-ed high school student populace, perhaps we need to organize a protest for students to drape the trees and bushes in underwear to bring attention to SLUT (Students Liberated of Underwear and Thongs).

This may seem silly, but any more so than www.dayofsilence.org encouraging students to tape their mouths? Day of Silence is a registered trademark of www.glsen.org. What is GLSEN, you ask? The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network was founded in 1990 as the Gay and Lesbian Independent School Teachers Network. This was not founded by students, for students, but as an organization of gay and lesbian school teachers.

"Why, Darren, are you so bothered by this protest?", you may ask. Because students should be in school for an education, not political indoctrination. Public schools are not the forum or the place for a political agenda regarding sexual preference. If students believe a protest is necessary to bring attention to bullying, then it should be for ALL whom are bullied. Equality is not represented by manufacturing a supposed minority then elevating a common cause to one in which they are the sole beneficiaries.

"Darren, why do you hate gay people so much? GLSEN is just trying to right a wrong."

I do not hate gay people. My first boss was gay, I have friends and family who are gay, when I worked for the Marriott Hotel I was one of a handful in my department who were not gay. I accept all people based upon their merits, not upon their skin color, religion, or sexual preference. Because, to get past the politics, that's all GLBT is, a statement of sexual preference.

How a person engages in sexual congress should not elevate them to special status.

So, if there is a problem in schools, deal with it. Parents get involved in your children's lives. As school is a large-group social activity (LGSA), it's not enough to ask, "What did you learn today?" If they're depressed, find out why. If they're angry, find out why. Do not be afraid of an honest conversation. If you believe they are having sex, be prepared to ask without anger. If they are having sex with someone of the same sex, you can parent without condoning. Keeping them safe is more than handing out condoms, it's providing an environment where they feel safe, can ask questions and express concerns.

Taping a mouth shut only briefly shines a light upon a single audience. Talking openly with your children will save a life.

Is LGBT Using Day of Silence As a Recruiting Tool? Part Two

The following is from a Deseret News article regarding teachers within the Jordan School District organizing protests regarding potential layoffs due to a budget short-fall.

Two days later, several hundred students walked out of class. A handful of teens protested at the Capitol Friday and a couple of dozen kids walked out of Fort Herriman Middle School Monday.

Jordan District officials said it's up to individual school principals to handle the repercussions of students leaving school to protest teacher layoffs. "The children have to face the consequences," said district spokesman Steven Dunham.

In general, Jordan District high schools require students to make up absences by attending a study and tutoring session before or after school or on Saturdays. For some students, the "protest" absence put them over their limit of allowed absences and they will have to do a make-up or suffer academically. Other students who protested had enough allowed absences to spare and will be unaffected.

As those whom we entrust our children do, so our children do also.

Is LGBT Using Day of Silence As a Recruiting Tool? Part One

So, let's get this on the table right away, I was harassed in school. In high school there was a senior who decided to pick on me for months. He simply chose to pick on me and the reason was never clear. Perhaps because I was a fat kid.

Although the bullying sucked, it did not drive me to suicide. The angst of being a teenager made me think about it a few times, but only think. As a "late-term" father, I have observed the teen mind in action. This, and reconnecting with high school friends through Facebook, has made me reflect upon my teen years. To which I have come to a conclusion: teens are self-absorbed weiners. They'll step over a pile of dog crap like it happened in a parallel dimension. They show up at dinner time, look at you cooking, sit down on the couch, change the channel you're watching, and when you present them a plate they'll look at you and say, "Oh, you made dinner? Yeah, not hungry. I stopped at Wendy's." Mind you, they were gone for less than 30 minutes and saw you preparing dinner before they left. When you ask, "If you were stopping at Wendy's, why didn't you ask me if I wanted something?" The reply, "Because you were making dinner and I didn't think you'd want anything."

Again, teens are self-absorbed weiners.

They're happy to take a handout and think their problems are constantly Earth-shaking. (Doubt me? Read their Facebook posts.) Apparently I've become an adult, because I now see the wisdom in the statement, "Yeah, you got problems. You take care of the mortgage for a few months and then tell me how hard you've got it."

More proof? Don't tell your teens you're "taking a nap", tell them you're going to make sweet, sweet love. See that look on their face? The revulsion and horror? Now ask if they plan on giving up sex when they're thirty-five. You will be gazed upon as if you are retarded. This, my friends, is the mind of a teenager.

Why Capitalism Works

(This is a wholly-excerpted essay from P.J. O'Rourke's book Eat the Rich. I have re-read the book multiple times. If you haven't, do so. It is a clear and entertaining insight into various political structures. The following is regarding Hong Kong's reconstitution following World War II.)

How Hong Kong Makes Everything From Nothing
by P.J. O'Rourke

"This essay is excerpted from his book Eat the Rich."

"Hong Kong is the best contemporary example of laissez-faire. The economic theory of "allow to do" holds that all sorts of doings ought, indeed, to be allowed, and that government should interfere only to keep the peace, ensure legal rights, and protect property. ...

Jesus, it's a rich city. Except where it's Christ-almighty poor. Hong Kong is full of that "poverty midst plenty" stuff beloved of foreign correspondents such as myself....

It's a modern place, deaf to charm, dumb in the language of aesthetics, caught up in a wild, romantic passion for the plain utilitarian. ...

Hong Kong was (and to be fair to its new commie rulers, remains for the moment) socialism's perfect opposite. Hong Kong does not have import or export duties, or restrictions on investments coming in, or limits on profits going out. There is no capital-gains tax, no interest tax, no sales tax, and no tax breaks for muddle-butt companies that can't make it on their own.

The corporate tax in Hong Kong is 16.5 percent of profits. The individual tax rate is 15 percent of gross income. Hong Kong's government runs a permanent budget surplus and consumes only 6.9 percent of gross domestic product (compared with the 20.8 percent of GDP spent just by the federal government in the U.S.) ...

Hong Kong has never had democracy, but its wallet-size liberties, its Rights-of-Man-in-a-purse, have been so important to individualism and self-governance that in 1995 an international group of libertarian think tanks was moved to perhaps overstate the case and claim, 'Hong Kong is the freest nation in the world.'

Free because there's been freedom to screw up, too. Hong Kong has no minimum wage, no unemployment benefits, no union-boosting legislation, no Social Security, no national health program, and hardly enough welfare to keep one U.S trailer park in satellite dishes and Marlboro Lights. Just 1.2 percent of GDP goes in transfers to the helplessly poor or subsidies to the hopelessly profitless.

Living without a safety net, people in Hong Kong have kept a grip on the trapeze. The unemployment rate is below 3 percent. In America, a shooting war is usually needed to get unemployment that low. The "natural rate" of unemployment is considered to be about 5 percent in the U.S., which rate would cause natural death from starvation in Hong Kong. ... Economic growth in Hong Kong has averaged 7.5 percent per year for the past twenty years, causing gross domestic product to quadruple since 1975. With barely one-tenth of 1 percent of the world's population, Hong Kong is the world's eighth-largest international trader and tenth-largest exporter of services. ...

Besides Americans, only the people of Luxembourg and Switzerland are richer than those of Hong Kong. And these are two other places where capital is allowed to move and earn freely. ...

Quite a bit of government effort is required to create a system in which government leaves people alone. Hong Kong's colonial administration provided courts, contract enforcement, laws that applied to everyone, some measure of national defense (although the Red Chinese People's Liberation Army probably could have lazed its way across the border anytime it wanted), an effective police force (Hong Kong's crime rate is lower than Tokyo's), and bureaucracy that was efficient and uncorrupt but not so hideously uncorrupt that it would not turn a blind eye on an occasional palm-greasing illegal refugee or unlicensed street vendor.

The Brits built schools and roads. And the kids went to school because they knew if they did not, they'd have to hit that road. And the U.K gave Hong Kong a stable currency, which it did totally by cheating -- first pegging the Hong Kong currency to the British pound and then, when everyone got done laughing at that, pegging to the U.S dollar at a rate of 7.8:1. ...

Hong Kong was also fortunate in having a colonial government which included some real British heroes, men who helped of these the place stay as good as it was for a s long as it did.

The most heroic of these was John Cowperthwaite, a young colonial officer sent to Hong Kong in 1945 to oversee the colony's economic recovery. ... while he was in charge, he strictly limited bureaucratic interference in the economy growth or the size of GDP. ...

During Cowperthwaite's "nothing doing" tenure, Hong Kong's exports grew by an average of 13.8 percent a year, industrial wages doubled, and the number of households in extreme poverty shrank from more than half to 16 percent."

F**k Sexual Harassment, Part 2

"They're real, and they're spectacular!" -Sidra, Seinfeld

"Because from across a crowded room he can't tell you have a great sense of humor." -Lee Jeans print ad

So, are we supposed to look? I'm serious, because I just don't know. Women have them, and they are spectacular. In addition, they have great legs, shapely hips, incredible bottoms, beautiful eyes, and brains. As with a great number of men, some women don't use them to their brains to full capacity. Guess what? I'm not interested. For these vapid creatures, the only thing separating them from a love doll is the squeaker. (In the interest of full disclosure, I don't know if a love doll is equipped with a squeaker. I've never owned one, been in close proximity to one, or purchased one. I did purchase an inflatable sheep once, but it was for a bachelor party in Wyoming.) I'm just not interested if they don't use their brain. God installed the equipment, so you may as well utilize it. A beautiful woman who doesn't use her intelligence is like running a Ferrari on only two cylinders -- fun to look at, exciting to climb into, but ultimately useless. There was a time when I was "less enlightened" that I would test a girl by making her watch an obscure Peter Sellers' comedy. If they asked, "What was that about?", I dumped them. At 18 I had a girl all but promise me a magic carpet ride before the movie began. Following the movie I never called her again. I was an asshole, but at least I didn't take advantage of the feeble-minded.

Not fair?

Well, later I would keep them around long enough to completely torment them. Following my divorce I dated a young lady whom believed saying, "I want to bear your children.", during coitus was excellent pillow talk. It's not. It's a mood killer. It's a boner killer. I believe it reversed the blood flow and sent my little buddy cowering in my abdomen. It was not to be an evening of romance. Did I dump her? Of course not, I had become enlightened . . . and thought she should become also. Our dates now became art films, documentaries on the Irish Republican Army, performances of Mozart's Requiem. I had decided to drive her off by becoming a pretentious asshole. It didn't work. She continued to put up with me. Hell, she followed me around with more vigor. I hadn't awoken her intellectual side, but apparently stirred her inner Bloodhound.

What's an aspiring asshole to do who still has a soul? Break up with the poor girl and allow her the freedom to mix with company who may appreciate her simple nature.

To be kind, I decided upon the George Costanza method of, "It's not you, it's me." I spent over an hour explaining how I was an asshole, she deserved better, that if she stayed with me I'd just try to come up with new ways of violating her. Nothing seemed to work. My attempts at separation only fueled her goal of clinginess. It was a love-fool standoff. She with her puppy dog, nearly cognizant stare, and me with no desire to explore her cave of love again for fear my swimmers would fight their way upstream and spawn. I may not have been showing a great deal of maturity, but I did remember where babies come from and decided my potential offspring should at least be able to tie their own shoes. This potential "partnership" was pulling me to the shallow end of the gene pool where my children would continue to gaze directly into the light, right up to the point the train hit them.

For every thrust of intellectual argument I was stymied by the parry of pure ignorance. I was nearly reduced to explaining that new rules issued by Hogswort didn't allow me to date "Muggles". She would have related to the reference (and probably believed it) but I just couldn't. My soul would have simply said, "Check please." An additional half-hour of discussion and she seemed to get it. We were breaking up, signing off for the last time, pursuing our destinies separately. I was done, she seemed okay, we'd said goodnight, all was right . . . until. She stopped, turned and looked at me and said,

"So, does this mean we can't hangout on Monday?"

(Apparently this has become a 3-part series. Check back as this rant devolved into NOTHING about sexual harassment. It just became about an ass.)

If you want me to pay for your healthcare, show me some respect and break in and steal it yourself. Don't send the government to do it for you.

(The following is an exchange between a friend and myself regarding the upcoming healthcare legislation. Names have been changed.)

[Greta] Because if it weren't for Hansel, I couldn't get insurance. I've tried in the past and been rejected for a couple minor issues. I have no faith in private insurers who are in business for profit, not for people's well being. something needs to change and at least the possibility for some change -- even if not perfect -- is going to be lost here shortly. I have skin in this game. I don't see it as a political issue for politician's political gains, politicians -- who by the way -- are covered by govt. insurance. so are vets, elderly and others who wouldn't want to lose it.

[Darren] I do not disagree with you in principle. Those who are legislating do not have skin in the game, so the policies they are attempting to enact they will not have to live with. Keep in mind, these same individuals do not have to contribute to Social Security, as they are exempt.

But I do not think Government should become the end-all/be-all of our healthcare. Not only do we have the examples from the U.K. and Canada, but I have first-hand experience with Government controlled insurance when I lived in Germany.

[Greta] I don't believe anyone is suggested that. they're just proposing an option to private health care to cover those who fall through the cracks. they've already said, if you like your health care (and you have it), by golly keep it

[Darren] I experienced a back strain that woke me up and brought me to tears. I could no longer resist going to the ER. Where in a US hospital I would have received pain meds, X-rays, and treatment, in Germany they rubbed capsacin on me and said there was nothing else they could do.

If the healthcare bill only provided an option for uninsured, a quasi-private system in the vein of the USPS, I would not be opposed. Unfortunately, the bill is not completely written. It is up in the air. They are asking Congress and the Senate to vote upon an incomplete bill. Some versions have contained a provision to make private insurance illegal. It still contains a fine or jail time for those who chose not to purchase insurance.

[Greta] I'm sorry for your experience. I too was injured in Europe, in France. tore ligaments in my leg. they took care of me w/o a problem. I thought it was amazing. but again, that's socialized care, and that's not what's being proposed here, tho I'd personally would be open to it. BTW, in this country, ER's are only obligated to stabilize you. if you're w/o insurance, private hospitals can then turn you away. I've heard stories about this from the persons it's occured to. most recently, a friend shared a U of U hospital room with someone shuttled from Idaho because they didn't have insurance

[Greta] Darren, that's not true about insurance being illegal. that was a twisted spin

[Darren] No, I read the page myself. The government already has health insurance systems in place. If they want to correct the problem of those unable to obtain insurance, allow them to buy into the same insurance provided to Congress and the Senate. If they can't afford it, allow those who are not already on Medicaid to join. The problem does not require 1300+ pages of legislation.

[Greta] why is everyone unnerved by the quantity of pages?

[Darren] Because more pages allow for more hidden agendas. Most members of Congress and the Senate have admitted they have not read the bill. To vote upon something without looking at it is insane. Would you have purchased your home if you had to review 1300+ pages from your mortgage company?

[Greta] because they're intimated by the number of pages?

not a relevant comparison [mortgage example] ...have to rely on that fact that there are consumer protection laws in place that ultimately minimize the number of pages involved in a home purchase

[Darren] And, I understand pre-existing situations. I am diabetic and had over 14 surgeries from birth to age 19.

[Darren] Not relevant?! You rely upon consumer protection laws?! When the government enacts broad legislation you DO NOT have any consumer protection laws. You are at the mercy of the law.

[Darren] It is our right, nay, our obligation, to question government. To allow unbridled legislation is to give up our liberty. Whether couched under "it will save lives" or "it's for the children", we are at risk of losing liberty every time new legislation is enacted.

F**k Sexual Harassment, Part 1

There is an old joke from the late '80's, "Did you hear Ted Kennedy lost the Senate Spelling Bee? He thought harass was two words."

I don't know why I included this, other than I think it's funny. There are a lot of things I find funny, from Jack Ass to Daniel Tosh. I like comedy that's stupid to surreal. But, collectively as a society, we've lost our sense of humor. Jack Ass was pretty popular when it aired on MTV although it involved a lot of dick jokes and guys getting hit in the balls. When I attended opening night of Jack Ass 2 the audience was equally graced by men and women. There was a lot of cheering and applauds. Everyone seemed to have a good time.

So, why does society accept piss, shit and genital jokes from comedians and movies, but if I say "dick" at work I'm "offensive". It's bullshit! I started to type, "our speech is censored", but that's cliche', and frankly, stupid. We're stifled by a supposed boogy man, our own minds.

To illustrate, last year a student was suspended from Redmond Junior High School for using a phrase oft quoted on NBC's The Office.

According to the report, a student made the (innocent) comment “you need to push it in further.” The offender’s reply: “That’s what she said!”

Of course it's juvenile, but it was said by a juvenile who heard it used on television. Not cable mind you, he wasn't quoting Lady Chatterley's Lover, but a program on network television shown during "the family hour". Nothing the young man said was offensive, except in the context of how the complainant [the teacher] heard it. Was he intending to make an off-color joke? Of course, but his comment did not "harass" anyone.

Sexual harassment began as a way to protect people (primarily women) from unwanted sexual advances in the workplace. The original definition identified sexual harassment as, " . . . the threat of job-loss or other punitive retaliation for not engaging in sexual behavior with a superior." It has now devolved to, " . . . a person feeling uncomfortable in the workplace for a comment or action of another individual." Fuck! That can be anything. Well, anything done by a man.

Oh, right now I have many of you up in arms. "It's not just a maaaannn. That's so sexist." Well, let's examine a scenario:

A man arrives at his workplace wearing a pair of Farah slacks from the 1970's and his shirt open to the third button. Not particular up-to-date look, but hey, he's comfortable. Well, the slacks are tight-fitting and provide an outline of his trouser buddy. A female co-worker goes to her supervisor and complains about the man's unsightly bulge and his exposed chest. The man is called into the office, lectured about inappropriate clothing in the office and given a written warning. This scars his employment record and he loses a promotion. (Of course, his choice of clothing may not have helped simply for it's lack of style, but I digress . . .)

Now, envision a woman in the same office. She arrives wearing pants so tight they appear to be painted on. She is sporting what is euphemistically referred to as "camel toe". Yep, that notorious cleft that says, "I'm not a tranny." In addition to the barely-there pants, she's wearing CFM pumps and a tight, white sweater straining to contain her love pillows. A man in the office feels this is inappropriate (this is a different department, so is not retaliation for the Farah slacks incident). He complains to a supervisor about "Lady Gaga" and feels her dress is creating a hostile work environment. If (and I mean if) he is taken seriously the woman may get a brief mention, in passing, that she may want to "tone it down". This is if the supervisor is male. In which case the complainant will later be ridiculed as a "fag" by the other males and receive hostile looks from the women in the office because he complained about "Barbie". If the supervisor is a woman it is likely he'll be treated as the problem because he was inappropriately staring at "Barbie" and she may not appreciate his leering. He's now the lech as it's his fault he looked.

Before you cry "bullshit", think about it. If I walked up to a manager and said, "Ginger's sexually harassing me by wearing those pants. They're so tight I can tell she's not wearing underwear." I would be the one reprimanded for making sexual comments in the workplace. If I was wearing the afore mentioned Farah's and a woman said, in a loud voice, "Hey, it looks like Darren's cock is about to jump out of his pants!" The remaining women would laugh and, again, I would be the one who would get pulled aside and told my attire was not appropriate for the workplace.

So fuck sexual harassment.

If I tell an off-colored joke, get over it. In private conversations you've told dirtier jokes. If I comment that you have pretty eyes, it was a compliment, not a come-on. If I touch you to get your attention or keep you from tripping, I wasn't groping you. We're not your enemies, simply people trying to get through a work day and make the best of it.

So take a pill, relax, and get laid. We're tired of the complaining.

Misplaced Priorities

(on March 2, 2010 I was contacted by Chelsea Ivie, Shelby's "sister", inquiring about a missing pet. She asked me not to tell Shelby. Well, we don't keep secrets in our home. The following is her letter and my response. I have posted the letter exactly as I received it. All typos and grammatical errors are those of the sender.)

First thank you for caring for my sister I do appreciate it, however I do wish to ask you one thing. Please do not tell my sister that I emailed you please I dont want to stir anything up. I was just wondering if by chance she has brought home a cat by any chance. When my sister gets mad she will do anything to hurt you, well she has caused many problems not only for my parents but for the intermediate family as well, it just so happened that the night of my cousin viewing my cat disappeared from my parent home, I am not accusing her of stealing my cat, however I know that she is mad at me cause I told her not to go to the funeral or viewing cause I did not want her to be embarrassed cause my family would have asked her to leave and would of walked her out. The last time I saw my cat was wed the 17th I have not seen her since. My cat was terrifed of people and she would never leave the porch she was too afraid if she was not on the porch she would be inside, my parents put her outside when they would leave. Please Please let me know if shelby has brought her home I would ask ian but I know he would tell her that I emailed him. If you could give me a call I would appreciate it XXX XXX XXXX again I am not trying to stir anything up or cause a fight I just want to know. Again thank you for caring for my sister.

Dear Ms. Ivie,

Thank you for your letter. My daughter is doing wonderful! As children are a blessing from God, my wife and I could not be more thrilled to have Shelby as a member of our family. She has brought immense joy to our home.

Regarding your inquiry about a cat: no, Shelby has not brought a cat home. On Wednesday, February 17th she was working, so you are incorrect in your assumption she was involved with the missing cat. Although she wanted the opportunity to mourn the loss of a family member, Shelby did not attend. My wife and I felt this to be a selfish request by you and the "family". It is shameful you and the Ivie's were unable to put your disagreements aside long enough to allow Shelby to bury a cousin.

I am sorry for the loss of your pet, but I am more saddened that you are more concerned about losing a cat that you are about losing a sister. You were raised in an LDS home and grew-up learning Christian principles, yet are unable to express forgiveness. Regardless of what Shelby may, or may not, have done she was your family. Your own misspent youth should have been an example. Instead, you and the Ivie's turned your back on her, and continue to reject her now.

Again, my daughter is doing well. She is thriving in an environment where she is loved.

Sincerely,

Darren Somsen

Why Adoption

(This post began as a reply to a friend asking why we want to adopt Shelby. This was my reply.)

Although this statement differs from my typical political opinion, this situation [the desire to legally adopt Shelby] gives me a broader appreciation for those seeking same-sex marriage.

For those who have separated themselves from the politics of gay activism, it is a matter of legally recognized commitment. Katrin and I encountered this while visiting our friends Peter and Dean. During the brief window same-sex marriage was legal in California they chose to marry. They are firmly devoted to one another and were celebrating 15 years together. Their love for each other is obvious and the decision to marry was a confirmation of their commitment to one another. In contrast, their friends Bob and Greg fought very hard against Proposition 8, yet completely reject the idea of marriage. In fact, Bob continuously told them, and continue to tell them, that he doesn't understand why they married. For Peter and Dean it was about their relationship, for Bob and Greg it was about politics.

With this said, why do Katrin and I continue to pursue legal adoption of Shelby even though she is an adult? Because we are a family and want it to be legally recognized. We could draw up a will and name her as Executor, sign limited powers of attorney allowing her to make decisions on our behalf if we are infirmed, but that's not family. Shelby has completed our family. She has opened chambers of my heart I didn't know existed, taught me more patience, and helped me become less selfish. Shelby has been a blessing from God and we love her beyond measure. The legal adoption may seem unnecessary, but to us, it's simply a necessity.

So, has this dichotomy changed my opinion? The laws of this state currently allow for adult adoption and I am thankful for this option. I don't know if I would become an activist if it was not allowed, but I would fight against any group who tried to take this option away from me or anyone else. Adoption is allowed as it is in the best interest of children and families.

Currently same-sex marriage is not allowed. I do continue to believe that marriage is a gift from God bestowed upon a man and a woman. This is why I reject the argument that, "gays are not allowed to marry." No, any man or woman in the U.S. can marry, just not a person of the same sex. Our laws also do not allow plural marriage, marriage between adults and children, marriage to animals, or marriage to objects. The continued deviation of law to bow to very small minorities of the public is a dangerous policy. But with this said, I would not want to take away the legal marriage Peter and Dean share. I would not campaign for same-sex marriage, yet I would not support any group actively fighting against it. I do not know how I would vote if such a proposition was introduced, but I would support the law if the majority voted in favor.

Clients, Sucking My Will To Work

Me (regarding my lack of motivation) Motivation: clients. We created a "viral" ad for a client. The client did not/does not understand the concept of a "viral" ad. He stated, "I don't want to put my name on it." Duh, most viral campaigns are intended to be stealthy.
So, I ran some ideas past him yesterday, and he's happy, but not for long, as I'm going to have to tell him he's going to have to pay more money, because he is a douche.

Holly What a dumb ass! He obviously isn't techie savvy.

Me He's a typical CEO who hears a buzzword and wants one, but doesn't know what it is, then when he gets it, doesn't "get" it, so complains that it looks "amateur", wonders where are the "clutter" is, when in fact his wife said, "no clutter". As I remind him of this and give him the feedback from the focus group that overwhelmingly loved the piece, he's still, " . . . but my friends didn't like it." Fuck you, get new friends.

What's the Difference Besides Party Affiliation

The following was released by Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi:

Pelosi: Where Are the Jobs, Mr. President?

August 1, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' announcement that 470,000 people abandoned their job searches in July and that 3.2 million private sector jobs have been lost since President Bush took office:

“The fact is that President Bush’s misguided economic policies have failed to create jobs. Since President Bush took office, the country has lost 3.2 million jobs, the worst record since President Hoover. And today we learned that in July nearly half a million people gave up looking for a job.

“Job losses are taking a real toll on the financial security of American families. While Democrats are fighting for opportunity, jobs, and economic security for working families, Republicans continue to focus on helping those who need help the least.

“According to today’s survey, while the national unemployment rate dropped slightly, it still stands at a near record high. In addition, the unemployment rate for African Americans was still over 11 percent in July, and the unemployment rate for Hispanics was 8.2 percent in July.

“It is time for President Bush and the Republicans to get to work for all Americans, not just the elite few.”

If this was such a supposed outrage during the Bush administration when the unemployment rate was 6.1%, Nancy Pelosi should be apoplectic with the current 9.7% unemployment.

For those interested, this represents a 59% increase in unemployment in 6 1/2 years. In January 2009, the last actual month of the Bush administration, unemployment rose to 7.2%. October 2008, the last month reported prior to the Democrats taking over the White House, Senate and Congress, the unemployment rate was 6.5%.

In September 2008, I had a good job making a great annual income. In October 2008 it became clear who would be elected president. Business owners and corporate CEOs became nervous, halting all capital expansion and hiring while "waiting to see" what would happen. As the president-elect had promised "change" in the form of higher taxes and wealth redistribution, businesses began layoffs to protect income and operating capital for 2009. Just one day prior to the inauguration of President Obama, I was laid-off. I took 10-months for me to find new employment. When I did, it was 1/3 of my previous salary and bonuses. Every company I had directed marketing, sales, or both previously had experienced an increase in annual income -- yet I couldn't find employment. Positions that previously would have received a dozen resumes now had stacks 2 - 3 inches thick.

Mind you, I love my new job. The people are great and I'm representing a product for which I am quite proud. But I do it knowing that I'll get 10 calls a day from creditors whom I can no longer pay. I pay my mortgage, but only because they have modified my rate. I keep up the payments to the credit union on the things I can't sell, and try to keep current on utilities. The Goldwing has been sold, Katrin's truck, the ATV rack, and guns. We seldom go out to dinner and the last movie we saw was Avatar, and some dear friends picked up the tab for that adventure.

This is the result of "Hope and Change". Nancy Pelosi was quite eager to point the finger at Republicans in 2003, saying, "It is time for President Bush and the Republicans to get to work for all Americans, not just the elite few." This was 23 months following the single deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. One that simply snuffed some companies out of business with the crumbling of the Towers. Others simply died a slow death due to the grinding halt of the U.S. economy following 9/11.

Now the Democrats have been in charge for over a year, and we have an unemployment rate 59% higher than President Bush and a Democrat-controlled Congress. There have been no terror attacks or significant external pressures upon the U.S. economy. There are troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, but history tells us that this should spur on the economy and put people to work manufacturing guns, ammunition, supplies, vehicles, and offensive and defensive weapon systems.

What we have seen is a tripling of the national debt by the Obama administration. They have poured 87 billion dollars into AIG, taken over GM, and sold off Chrysler to Fiat. In doing so, they arbitrarily mandated the cancelling of dealership agreements. Instead of allowing the free market to decide which dealers would remain in business, they dictated which would be closed. This cost tens of thousands of jobs. From service technicians (mechanics) to sales people and administration, suddenly they joined the ranks of the unemployed.

So when you hear the pundits claim the Obama administration has saved or created millions of joins, remember the unemployment rate has significantly increased under the current administration. Regardless of the 1984-styled double-speak, that means more American's are unemployed (statistically) than any other time in our Nation's history with the exception of the Great Depression of the 1930's.

Remember this when you vote in November. It may seem way off in the future, but it's not. In the next 8 months you will be told how great things are getting. The media will continue to quote "experts" who will say the recession is over. Well, it ain't. Since the Democrats will not hold President Obama responsible for putting 8,700,000 Americans out of work, then we need to hold them responsible. Real change will only come when we vote for new Congressmen and Senators.

Late-Term Father

This is going to be a theme for awhile. For background, see below:

(This was a response to a friend who asked, "You want to adopt an adult?")

Technically, yes, as Shelby is 18.

She came into our life through a mutual friend. She was adopted at 45 minutes old by a couple who I don't think should have passed the background interviews. When Shelby was 3 her adoptive parents had a biological child of their own. Shelby became Cinderella.

By the time she was 16 they had sent her to Wasatch Canyon, a wilderness program, and a boarding school in Missouri. At 16, they tried to return her to the State. When the State said "no", they forced her to emancipate so they could kick her out without ramifications.

At 17 she joined the Utah National Guard and entered basic training when she graduated high school. She tried to reconnect with her family with a letter. Debbie (the adoptive mother), sent a response that paraphrased said, "We hate you, don't contact us again, ever!"

About 1 month later she tried again. Keep in mind, mail call in basic training requires a private to do 20 push-ups for a letter, 100 for a package. When she received mail she gladly dropped to her belly and did her push-ups. When she opened the envelope she found her original letter returned, unopened.

Katrin and I offered her a place to stay when she returned from her AIT (specialty training). During this time we sent her packages and letters. Within a few weeks she started calling us Mom and Dad. She joined our home a right after Thanksgiving. Since then we have become very close and she is our daughter, except by law. So, I researched it and found Utah statute allows for adult adoption as long as the adoptive parent is a minimum of 10 years older. Well, I'm 25 so I think I qualify. Since Shelby is an adult, we do not require anyone's consent other than hers. She wants to be our daughter and we want to be her parents. All we need to make this happen is the assistance of a kind attorney who can prepare the petition to meet the court's requirements.

Do you know an attorney who can help?

An Apology to Someone I Wronged . . .

In the meantime, I've tried to respond to you multiple times, but I am either interrupted by work, or at a loss . . .

When I first read your reply I interpreted that you believed I ruined your life. I started to cry . . . in fact, I'm crying now just thinking about it. Oh how I loved you, the thought that I ruined your life is crushing. My alternate interpretation is that I ruined "our" life together . . .

Equally sad, and entirely my fault.

There are some people who pass through our lives, but don't leave a mark. You were not one of those people. I remember so much about our time together. You left a mark . . .

It honestly took until I was an adult (well, older at least) to realize some of what I had done and how wrong I was.

If I ruined your life, I am so sorry, I will wear the scar on my soul forever.

If you referred to our life together, I know I fucked up. The road less traveled and all. It was bizarre how we continued to bump up against one another. Holiday Inn, The Old Spaghetti Factory . . .

I recognized you, but I didn't know what to say. The look in your eyes told me you were still very angry with me, and I didn't want to make your date awkward, so I just bit my tongue and played as if you were a stranger . . .

. . . you weren't. My heart jumped into my throat.

I never forgot about you, how badly we ended, nor that it was my fault. I truly want you to know how incredibly sorry I am. You were an angel and I, well, was not.

Love,

Darren

F**k Award Shows

I've given up on award shows. They are simply self-congratulatory, masturbation fests for the lowest common denominators of society. The media has a crush on celebrities, so they lionize them. The press puts them on TV, magazine covers, and the internet. Then we're supposed to bow to them as our children idolize them. And we wonder what has happened to the "younger generation". Well, WE'VE ALLOWED THEM TO BE RAISED BY SUB-INTELLIGENT MONKEYS AND CLOWNS!

Think I'm overreacting? Last summer the newsstands were inundated by magazine covers about Jon, Kate, Heidi and Spencer. Do you want confirmation that I'm not overreacting? Without last names you know of whom I am speaking! In an era when Kim Kardashian became famous for having a sex tape, I weep for the future. There is no longer any journalistic integrity. Journalism is dead, what we have left is the intellectual equivalent of snuff films.
